An international airline at a major US airport had a release of AFFF in their hangar. Following cleanup and containment, the airline needed to clear the 100,000-gallon underground storage tank capacity of the system of the spent AFFF foam. The airline was concerned with future joint-and-several liability under CERCLA if the spent foam was discharged to a treatment facility or taken to a landfill for solidification. Our team researched other options that could lower their liability. Following the evaluation on many alternatives, the spent foam and cleanup water was transported to an incineration facility in Utah where it was destroyed. Group Delta is currently developing a design for an onsite mobile treatment system to treat similar contaminated waste onsite to lower costs for sustainable reuse.
