This 40-acre site was redeveloped to become the new East Mesa Campus for UCSD, and consists three phases – Mesa Nueva, Nuevo West and Nuevo East. The development includes 25 mid-rise residential buildings, up to two high-rise buildings, two parking structures, and a pedestrian bridge crossing a canyon. The community is one of the largest graduate and professional student housing programs in the University of California system and one of the biggest in the country.
Group Delta, an NV5 Company, worked closely with UCSD Project Management, UCSD Environmental Health Services, and the Progressive Design-Build Contractor, Hensel Phelps, to develop geotechnical and environmental remediation recommendations and earthwork construction guidelines for the proposed buildings and infrastructure.
Our team provided the oversight of the UCSD Site Development Guidelines and Procedures and all relevant historical environmental reporting for the project site and the development of a Soil Management Plan for the projects.
The purpose of the Soil Management Plan was to provide guidance to the grading and construction contractors for the proper handling and management of lead contaminated soils encountered during construction for offsite disposal of more than 20,000 tons of Federal RCRA Hazardous Waste, and more than 20,000 tons of California Non-RCRA Hazardous Waste.
