The SoFi Stadium serves as the home of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. The stadium has a seating capacity of 70,240 for most NFL games which can be expanded to over 100,000 for major events such as the Super Bowl, concerts or international tournaments. The stadium is part of a major 298-acre mixed-use redevelopment that also includes residential units, office space, retail stores, hotel, lakes, and a casino
Group Delta, an NV5 Company, provided geotechnical engineering services for the Hollywood Park redevelopment, including the SoFi Stadium, mixed-use buildings, parks, and infrastructure. The team conducted a detailed site-specific ground motion study, which involved assessing seismic hazards, developing earthquake ground motions in line with ASCE 7-16 standards, and performing site response analyses to evaluate how the ground would behave during seismic events. These studies considered the effects of the nearby Newport-Inglewood fault to help inform structural design. Additionally, our team supported the design of a large retaining wall by conducting 2D dynamic analyses, developing soil models, and evaluating the wall’s seismic performance.
Value Added
- Enhanced Seismic Resilience: Our team’s advanced ground motion studies and site-specific seismic hazard assessments, including near-fault effects and time-delay impacts from the Newport-Inglewood fault, ensured the stadium and surrounding infrastructure were designed to withstand significant seismic events.
- Optimized Structural Design: By performing nonlinear site response analyses and 2D dynamic modeling for critical structures like large retaining walls, our team provided essential data that informed safe and efficient structural designs across the 298-acre development.
- Compliance and Innovation: The team’s adherence to ASCE 7-16 standards and development of tailored earthquake ground motions demonstrated a commitment to both regulatory compliance and engineering innovation, contributing to the long-term safety and success of this landmark project.
